Part of Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2011, Modernism, a Sentimental Myth includes a walking tour, panel discussion and club night. The event includes four artists from Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2011 whose work connects ideas of architecture and modernism, and a panel of professionals from art, architecture and urban planning.

Speakers on the panel are: Murray Fraser, professor of architecture at the Bartlett; Victoria Walsh, Visiting Research Fellow at the Institute of Modern and Contemporary Culture; artist-curator Juan Bolivar; and Fay Nicolson, artist, writer and curator with an interest in the legacy of modernism.

Artists involved are: Yelena Popova, Minae Kim, Poppy Whatmoreand David Ben White

Documentation of The Anti Library at SPACE, London 2011.

Oliver Smith and I collaborated to create a display environment to house The Anti-Library, an exhibition initiated by Paul Pieroni in the Library at SPACE. Relating to Nassim Nicholas Taleb’s text The Black Swan (in which he states ‘read books are far less valuable than unread ones’) The Anti-Library explores ideas of anti-knowledge and un-learning; inviting 150 contributors to present a single unread book from their own collection alongside a short text.

Re-makers of Simple Furniture focuses on personal book collections, the domain of domestic (dis)order and the legacy of homely British Modernism. This display scenario references a modular unit made in 1932 by Gerald Summers and his wife, Marjorie Butcher. Through repetition and quotation, this installation subverts the unit’s dialectic and modular function whilst acknowledgng its ramifications within popular, mass-produced furntiure design.
